OLCD TV - Organic LCD TV

The technology that drives an Organic LCD TV is OLED, Organic Light Emitting Diode or Organic LED. This in itself is based on LEP, Light Emitting Polymer and OEL, Organic Electro Luminescence. An OLCD TV is one with a light emitting diode, LED, whose emissive electroluminescent layer is composed of a film of organic compounds. The layer usually contains a polymer substance that allows suitable organic compounds to be deposited. They are deposited in rows and columns onto a flat carrier by a simple 'printing' process. The resulting matrix of pixels can emit light of different colors.

OLCD v OLED

So what's the difference between OLCD and OLED? In non-acronym terms, OLCD stands for Organic Liquid Crystal Display and OLED stands for Organic Light Emitting Diode.

An OLED emits light whereas an OLCD simply gates light from another source, for example, a lamp behind the display screen. Another way of explaining it is that the OLED the opposite of a solar cell. A solar cells is hit by light and produces electricity. An LED is hit by electricity and produces light.

In practical terms, we are used to LCD TVs and as such it is likely that the term OLCD TV becomes popular rather than OLED TV, but only time will tell.
